GoGo: Fluffies vs Boots

Normally I wouldnt care too much about this as it really IS just a matter of personal preference, but nowadays it seems to have been taken to a whole different level; a matter of PROFESSIONALISM and how seriously you are taken. So here we have the great debate; Fluffies Vs Boots.

Some of you may be scratching your heads and asking... "Wtf is fluffie?"... a "fluffy" is simply a faux fur leg warmer/boot cover, a fashion trend that reigns supreme in not just the gogo world now but the EDM culture in general. The thing of it is though, it wasnt always just a TREND. Fluffies actually serve a functional purpose in the world of dancers believe it or not, but sadly, most dont even know what it is and will blink at you blank faced at the mention of it, totally clueless. So what is this mysterious function? To blurr the feet while dancing! Its a simple but sneaky visual effect. Thats right my friends... its not just give the appearance of overly hairy & adorable legs:P. Fluffies are adored by dancers & regular party patrons alike for their "cute" look and versatile, seemingly endless options. So lets talk about their contender,

BOOTS.
GoGo "stacks" or boots have basically become what some would call the "industry standard" because they look more "professional"... but honestly I dont have too much to say on this because personally, and to be blunt, no sugar or fluff added, I find it a little snobby. Dont get me wrong, I OWN THREE PAIRS. I love my boots; they give you incredible balance, comfortability, and height to DIE for. And I understand that because of their intimidating and impressive appearance, they help to set "professional" dancers apart from those who do not intend on being quite so professional at these events, but still. Even now you will see over-achieving fashionistas who really are just regular attendees donning the same footwear so now there is almost no distinction besides whether or not you have an event badge(and how you choose to behave:P).

I guess what I'm trying to say here is I think you should wear what will suit you best; what is going to express your concept the best, and what is going to make you feel the best, because confidence and attitude are everything. The industry "standard" shouldnt be a particular item in your wardrobe, it should be about your overall PRESENTATION. If you carry yourself professionally, that alone will set you apart from the rest. And if you dont know what I mean by that, then you probably dont even need be bothered with it anyway:)

*SCREECH* - HOLD ON!

So here I am, enjoying my bright and early morning, cup of hot coffee in hand, my newest recorded episode of Ghost Mine playing on the t.v. to get me caught up, while surfing the web to read other's opinions of one of my obvious favorite t.v. shows, Heroes of Cosplay, when I stumbled upon this article by Comics Alliance. As I read, for the most part, I was genuinely enjoying the varying perspectives and little tidbits of info regarding the Heroes of Cosplay celebrity figures (particulary focused on Yaya Han), when I came to a screeching halt in the middle of a rather negative critique yet AGAIN about Jessica Nigri. While I was annoyed with Comic Alliance's senior editor, Andy Khouri, and his dismissive view on Jessica's cosplay apparel, basically calling it cheap lingerie (I'm thinking... firstly, she's hot as hell, why wouldnt you want to see her dressed like this, and secondly, shes portraying CHARACTERS, if you want to criticize the way she looks then why not give your opinion to the creators of the characters she portrays lol... really, where is your sense of fun?), but the thing that REALLY caught my attention and sent me into this tirade was A.K.'s statement about her costumes in comparison to the EDM scene; "Jessica Nigri seems to appear mainly in costumes that are virtually identical to those you see at electronic music festivals here in downtown Los Angeles; basically store-bought bikinis or exotic dancer gear the attendees wear because they sweat so much while on ecstasy" .... lets highlight this; "the attendees wear BECAUSE they sweat so much while on ecstasy". Okay so we have highlighted the object of my irritation, so now its time to discuss this. I find it so ignorant and nonchalant of people to assume that EVERYONE in the EDM scene is on drugs, especially when basing this assumption on the attire. Yes, the EDM scene is FAMOUS for its eccentricity, but that doesnt mean its BECAUSE EVERYONE is all twacked out on some substance. The electronic dance culture basically is one big costume party. This is for a few obvious reasons, the first which should be so blatantly obvious... its fuckin' FUN. If you want to attend a concert in your jeans then be my guest, but if I have the opportunity to be as decadent as a christmas tree or Princess Peach from Mario then you better believe I am going to do it. Secondly, have you ever actually attended one of these events? Not for the purpose of being a stand alone snob, but to actually have fun? These events get HOT. Whether you are on stage underneath all those lights or balls to the wall packed tighter than sardines in a can within the crowd, you are going to sweat your skin off. Wearing these "skimpy" outfits actually serves a purpose other than being flamboyant or "sexy", it helps keep the body cool. No one wants loads of material being glued to their skin with their own sweat. Yes, my scathing retort is because I AM one of these people at these events scantily clad, and no it is NOT because I am so tweaked out that I cant remember my first name. As a stage performer, you really appreciate the times when you can wear these bathing suit style outfits because you are in for a long night of exercise (as I'm sure any regular patron would agree!). So keep your nose in the air, Mr. A.K., but you might think twice about making these derogatory statements unless you are going to make it more general (and accurate!). "Drugs are bad, mmmkay?" but they can be found in any music culture, and you making that statement as though it were FACT about the ENTIRE EDM Community, as opposed to uneducated/unexperienced perspective, was a bit ridiculous. /End Rant!

Throwback Thursday!

Throwback! This was at the beginning of the year actually, this shot is of me onstage with Le Castle Vania ... awesome way to start off 2013 ❤!

Heroes of Cosplay ~ Season Finale

So I know I'm a little late on this one, but if you are a recent fan of Heroes of Cosplay like me, then you will have more than likely watched the season finale on tuesday night. It was a loaded episode, Yaya Han returned to compete for the first time in 4 years with her fellow cosplayers Monika Lee, and Riki Lecotey aka Riddle, donning the name "Team Atlanta". They took the stage with the theme Alice in Wonderland: Return to Madness, with Yaya as the Queen of Hearts, Monika as the Cheshire Cat, and Riki as Alice. Other notables also teaming up for this competition was "Team LA", comprising of Becky Young, Jessica Merizan, and Holly Conrad, with the lovable theme of "How to Train Your Dragon; Becky as Astrid, Jessica as Tuffnut, and Holly as Ruffnut. The competition took place in Kansas city, which was LESS than welcoming to these dedicated cosplayers. In fact, there were apparently rumors flying around the con that Syfy intentionally planted the two teams at this con so that they would win. To make matters even WORSE, the judges for this con, their identities being just as vague as their pre-judging & final decisions (I literally cannot remember who they were nor find any info on it on the web.. argh) were excessively non nonchalant about pretty much EVERYTHING. Both teams LA & Atlanta put in so much time and effort into their costumes and much to everyone's chagrin, particularly a bewildered Yaya, the judges didn't even budge from their chairs to do a close up inspection of the craftsmanship or details. To be quite honest, all of the judges looked less than thrilled to be a part of the event and couldn't appear to be more disinterested in any of it. But it doesn't stop there. Remember how friendly we were saying Kansas was (is?)? Yeah, about that. Members of the audience and even the other competing cosplayers made it a point to not only make both teams LA & Atlanta feel hideously unwelcome, but also went as far as calling them FAKE. Are you kidding me? You are privelaged enough to be a part of such a creative community where you have the opportunity to not just meet experienced crafters & actors as these two teams, but also LEARN something from them, and you have the nerve (and apparent ignorance) to call them fake? Jealousy is ugly enough, but you don't need to make yourself look like a joke by also calling the professionals less than amateur. The outcome of this hotbed of drama at least had something good come out of it, Team Atlanta scored the Grand Prize, but sadly Team LA was awarded nothing. I was extremely shocked with some of the judges decisions (Excluding Team Atlanta's win) but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised when the judges & Kansas natives in general just seemed to be completely whack. Anyways... its obvious how I feel :P I cant wait for season 2... I hope these guys come out swinging!!!
